To get back to the X session, it would normally be
ALT-CTRL-F7, but that won't be useful if the X server's
comatose or dead.
>From the text console, you can look around at what processes
are running, you can kill problematic processes, do cleanup
or repairs from processes that went astray, etc. With luck,
you could kill off the old X session's stuff, which would
allow you to start up a new X session without rebooting.
