Configuring X using the FBDev server?

I wondered whether this option for unsupported video cards was available
in RedHat 9?
Spent several hours trying to get X up and running and failed dismally
and have had to resort to Mandrake.
Would appreciate some help on this as i remember first installing RedHat
when it was version 6 and i had an unsupported video card then and it was
lot easier to configure if i remember.
