That sounds like resetting the content of the CMOS... one way of doing it is
by removing the battery :-)

The fact that both computers have the same problem may be due to the way you
installed RH9 (for example by giving the same boot-"append" parameters for
your systems).

Make sure RH9 (specifically grub or lilo) knows exactly the geometry of your
hard drives.
