Are you sure you aren't missing other users? Red Hat makes
changes to system-related accounts in the password and group
files on a reglar basis. Could you have missed some other
account, or perhaps a (subtle) change in an account entry?
Rather than copying /etc/passwd and such from an older OS
version, I would be inclined (based on experience) to copy
over just the non-system-related real user accounts, usually
the ones with userid numbers 500 and above. I don't know
that will solve the whole problem you're seeing, but it
would eliminate a few potential causes.
