Solution for configuring Dell Inspiron 1100 display card

Dell Inspiron 1100
RAM: 512 MB, 40 GB HDD
Video Card: Intel 845GL
Monitor: LCD, supports 1024x768 px resolution with 16 million (24 bit) color
depth
Bios: A28
OS: Fedora Core 1

Problem: Installation of either Fedora Core 1, RH 9, Mandrake 9.2 or Suse
8.1 results in a window of size 640x480. The monitor should infact display
1024x768 px resolution.

Solution: During installation, when the monitor is probed, the OS installer
(anaconda/yast2/etc) might not detect a monitor and may select an unknown
monitor or generic monitor. The user SHOULD select 640x480 LCD monitor and
go ahead with installation. After the installation is complete,

MOST IMPORTANTLY: DOWNLOAD 845 PATCH FROM http://projects.nudieman.com/500m/

* Log on GNOME into ROOT
* Go to system setting--display--change monitor from 640x480 LCD to 1024x768
LCD. Change the resolution to 1024x768.
* Switch to text based tty (CTRL-ALT-F<n>) where <n>= either 2, 3, 4, 5, or
6 (recommended CTRL-ALT-F2)
* log on to root
* #> rpm -ivh 845patch*i386.rpm
* Once installed, #> cd /usr/sbin
* usr/sbin#> ls 8*
* usr/sbin#> should show you an executable file 845<something>
* run that file by either usr/sbin#> 845<something> 524288
* Where did his 524288 come from? Frankly, I have no idea...I was reading
the manual of Dell and it struck to me that the video card RAM might be
either 1MB or in my wildest dreams - 512 MB (I have no idea why 512 came to
mind - maybe because the system RAM was 512). Anyways, doing

usr/sbin#> 845<something file name> 524288

Will reset X-window's configuration. Now go back to GUI (by pressing ALT-F7,
or CTRL-ALT-F7) and kill the 640x480 window by pressing
CTRL-ALT-<BACKSPACE>...this kills the X-server. Normally X-server will
automatically start and now you will have 1024x768 resolution

wooo hoooo !!! If the procedure needs to be repeated, I can do it in my
sleep too. lloll.
