512mb works fine, 1024mb RAM is slow...

I have Redhat 9, on a p4 2,66. 1024 mb ram.
When I have 512 mb in it, it runs fine, no problems.
But when I put the other stick of 512 in it, it runs like 10 times slower,
Booting takes ages (about 5-10 minutes) and running a simple program will
use much more of the cpu then normal
'top' shows a load of 1,5% cpu usage, but with 512 mb ram it's just 0 %,
also when just booted uptime gives a load of 1.75.

How can this be possible? / How can I solve it?
