Then install apt/synaptic or yum to update/maintain your system;

http://shrike.freshrpms.net/ and read; http://freshrpms.net/apt/

Typically (as root) for apt/synaptic from where the packages are stored;

$ rpm -ivh apt*.rpm ;installs the main package

$ rpm -ivh synaptic*.rpm ;installs the optional GUI interface to apt

$ apt-get update ;(updates the list of available RPM updates to the
                    current level. You need to do this first)

$ apt-get dist-upgrade ;(updates the installed packages to the currently
                           available packages, this will take a lot of
                           time, many updates since RHL9 was released)

This can done also using synaptic the GUI interface to apt, you will need
to end (log out) and restart (log in) your GUI session to get the synaptic
menu item (System Settings > Synaptic).

A little trick to 'download/install' at the same time without actually
downloading the package(s), as root from the console or xterm session
type;

rpm -ivh
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/apt/apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm

The above command is one long line with a space between 'rpm -ivh' and the
rest of the command.

The synaptic install line (same thing as above);

rpm -ivh
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/synaptic/synaptic-0.42-1.fr.i386.rpm

If you want to use yum (command line only) instead;

rpm -ivh
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/yum/yum-2.0.4-1.rh.fr.i386.rpm

$ yum check-update OR $ yum list updates
    (See if there are updated packages available.)

$ yum update
    (Update all installed packages that have a newer version available.)
