synaptics touchpad not working after upgrading to 2.6 kernel

Hello,

I've recently downloaded the 2.6.2 kernel from kernel.org and
installed it. My synaptics touchpad tap-click does not work when I
boot into this kernel. I've done many hours of research and trying
things. Here's what I've done:

I've downloaded and followed the instructions at
http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/index.html

I've tried passing the parameter psmouse.proto=imps to the kernel at
boot.

Neither of these has caused any change at all. Can anyone suggest
what else I can check for or do? It's driving me nuts! (mostly
because I can't fix it)
