OpenOffice has already been recommended. If you want something that is
closer to Microsoft Word, both user interface-wise and in file formats,
you might want to investigate TextMaker and PlanMaker:

Both applications work under Linux, *BSD, Windows, Pocket PCs, Handheld
PCs and soon on the Sharp Zaurus as well. Users trained in Microsoft
Office will quickly feel at home with TextMaker and PlanMaker.
