This didn't seem to do anything in my case. X still refused to start after
I made the change and rebooted.

> $ mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.oldsystem

> $ system-config-display

This, however, fixed my problem right away, and I'm happily posting from KDE
at the moment. So, thank you very much for the pointer.

I'm going to go and see if I can get my Audigy working now. X doesn't seem
to be the only thing that died.
