The chipset is an Ali M1433, which should be supported by the Alim1xx driver
in Linux.
I recompiled the kernel to include this support, running through make
mrproper, make dep, make clean, make modules, make modules_install, make
bzImage, make install.
Checked grub which is correct and has ide0=ali14xx on the command line as
required by the driver.
In /boot I can see the new kernel image, the new initrd image and the
System.map file (currently symlinked to an old kernel image but I have
pointed this at the correct image, which had no effect)

The kernel is for RH9 on a i386 version 2.4.20-31.9. The only way in which
is customised from the default (which works fine) is the support for this
driver.
All that happens when the machine is rebooted is the BIOS loads, the dynamic
drive overlay loads, grub loads, but when this kernel is selected the screen
goes blank and the machine reboots itself...
