rpm and kernel compile questions

I am using a fresh install of Red Hat Fedora FC2.
I have a dma error that has a fix by editing a ide-probe.c file, then the
kernel needs re-compiled. I can't get the re-compile to work.
I know that the Up2Date program can download an rpm of a newer kernel and
install it, and it works fine.
Is there a way to take that rpm and decompress it, make the file
modifications, re-compress it, then install it?

Thanks,

Chris
