Try adjusting the defaults on artsd;
KDE Control Center-->Sound & Multimedia-->Sound System
Skip Prevention:
Run with the highest possible priority (realtime priority) enabled Sound
buffer; 13 to 20 fragments with 4096 bytes (default is 10)
Auto-Suspend:
Auto-suspend if idle after (one second) enabled
And wherever possible use ALSA as the sound output default.
