Greetings,
I have come across a rather annoying problem at work.
We use RedHat 8.0 machines, with the standard KDE 3.0.3 and Gnome that come
with it. We've noticed on a few of the machines, while logged in to kde, if
we right click on a folder, or on a file and hit properties, the system
freezes on the spot, no log entries... If we try to reproduce the problem
in Gnome, it doesn't freeze... The users (authentication) and home
directories, as well as many other folders are accessed via NIS/NFS. But we
tried as root, without accessing anything on the network (I right-clicked
on the CD rom icon on the desktop) and it froze.
I was wondering if anyone has encountered such a problem before, and if yes,
how was it resolved? Would upgrading KDE resolve it? I'm not yet ready to
go that way as building KDE 3.2 is quite an undertaking for machines that
run simulations pretty much 24 hours a day...
Unfortunately, the company uses commercial software whose vendor only
supports RH 8.0, so an upgrade of the OS is not yet an option...
What really puzzles me is that not all the machines seem to have the
problem, and that it started out of nowhere.
If anyone can give me some pointers, it would be really appreciated.
Here are the machines specs:
RedHat 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18smp-14)
KDE 3.0.3
Gnome (version that ships with RH8.0)
XFree86 4.2.1
Tyan K8W dual motherboard
Dual Opteron 1.6G
1024GB (or more) of RAM
200GB SATA Maxtor HD
ATI Radeon 9600 video card
Thanks alot
