We use this at work at it runs very well on P2 166's.
We have two scenarios; the most common is where the
thin client only runs Linux - the m/c either does
a PXE boot or it does a DOS boot and launches the
appropriate Etherboot ROM image (www.rom-o-matic.net)
The other is the "dual boot" machines (again P2 166's).
These run Win98 and a served by NT4 PDC and file server.
I've chucked in a little DOS startup menu, which either
continues the normal Win98 boot or launches the Etherboot
ROM image.
This is a great way to continue to use ancient hardware;
old boxes themselves are fine but they just aren't powerful
enough to run the lastest M$ o/s. Rather than replacing
PC's every 4-5 years (ie as dictated by the o/s) we are
looking at replacing them every 10-15 years (ie as
dictated by us or the electronics). As a school, we have
a miniscule budget and as most of our hardware was
donated, we can setup classrooms of 28 desktops for very
little money. The head of IT has written a blurb about it:
