Get yum.

Then do a yum install proftpd (is the same as apt-get, but for some reason
I prefer yum :)
It will solve the dependencies for you when you install new software.
I hope you have the dependencies installed for yum tho :)
http://rpmfind.net and search for gcc, you will need that for the compiling
Download the rpm package for your distro and voila
