So is this. Kudzu isn't the problem; it *is* autodetecting the
CDROM.

I _would_ like to see the results of:
$ ls -l /dev/cdrom
and
$ ls -l /whatever/device/dev/cdrom/poins/to
Dear OP: what kind of CDROM media are you attempting to examine? Can
you mount one of your installation CD's?
