FC3 installs fine - freezes system after startup

I have just completed my second installation attempt of FC3 on one of my
systems. The installation was completely uneventful (including the setup
steps related to first boot). Normal environment is the default GUI
    (runlevel 5).

Problem is that after the system boots, you have a certain amount of
time during which the startup seems normal - typically long enough to
get through a login/password and the setup of the desktop. However,
about 2 - 3 minutes into the process (from appearance of the login
screen), the cursor freezes on screen and the system is totally hung
with the hard drive light on (something is in a serious loop perhaps).
The approx 2-3 minutes interval is important, since if you simply wait
at the login prompt for that amount of time, the system also locks up.

Figuring it might be a display-related problem, I did a reboot and edit
of the GRUB parameters to startup in runlevel 3 to work in command line
mode. After a suitable time period in command line mode, the system
simply locks up, hard drive light on. Consequently I doubt it is
    display-related.

System is a VIA/Cyrix 600 MHz CPU, 256 meg memory, 8 meg video card
    (integrated onto the motherboard - a "PLE01"), hda 40gig – 7200 rpm,
    3.5 inch floppy, 5.25 inch floppy, 48x CDROM, 48-24-48x CD-R/W drive,
on-board/integrated sound card, 56k modem (not used), 10/100 NIC (
Linksys LNE100TX and network runs at 100 mbps – Ethernet), Logitech
    Optical Mouseman Wheel mouse (USB).

I can access the system using the rescue disk but have not found any
useful info - likely just don't know what to look for.

I know that in FC2 the VIA C3 had a problematic installation process
(which I managed to get through) and the system ran fine in FC2 since
its installation. The installation was done as a clean install on the
40gig HD. Once again, no hints of any problems anywhere in the
    installation process.

Anyone with any ideas, guidance, or insight? It really is great getting
    into it early isn't it!
