SSL_connect error

When I try to update my system, I get an error stating SLL_connect error. I
am able to get to the net but not able to to update my system. I did a bit
of research into it and found that I have to update my browser. I've
downloaded and untarred Firefox and tried using chmod to change the settings
on the file. Just wondering if I'm going about it the right way? Tried to
set the file settings by using chmod -777 filename. Am I on the right
track?
