If you are not actually using the X full time, you could let the server
run on level 3 (from root account write "init 3") to decrease the load
on the processor.
This is still multiuser state but one without the graphical UI.
Also if it seems slow it might be that the processor is slow for the
task it is doing. What is the purpose of this server?
