I tried to install Redhat EL 3 on my laptop. Everything went OK except
for supporting my PCMCIA NIC. It turns out that the bastards at Redhat
decided that some PCMCIA cards (that are supported by every
distribution!) are not to be supported by Redhat.
But what good is a PC nowadays without network connectivity?
So, I downloaded pcmcia-cs-3.2.8.tar.gz in order to recompile and build
that part (since the stupid morons at Redhat won't let me use a working
driver that *they* didn't compile for me). I built it and installed it -
only to find out that "something" in the build environment of Redhat EL
*intentionally* prevents this particular driver from being installed.
I did some research on the Internet and discovered that this was no
coincidence since the incompetents at Redhat have introduced some
serious bugs into their latest pcmcia support (that barred NICs like
mine from operating without a segmentation fault) and have no clue how
to fix it. So they disabled it as a "solution"...
Nice work, idiots! (Redhat starts reminding me of Microsoft, which is
why I went to Linux in the first place).
So, does Linux suck? No. Not at all. Only Redhat sucks.
Yeah, I could bend over backwards to make Redhat EL work with my PCMCIA
NIC, but why do it when there are so many other Linux distributions that
support it out-of-the-box and save me time and agony - not to mention
that they run much faster and leaner (see Gentoo, Feather, etc.).
