Hello,

I just got an old Celeron 500 MHz PC for free, so I thought it would be a
good idea to see if Red Hat/Linux is just a hype or mythe, or if it really
works.

I downloaded Red Hat 9 (Shrike) from LinuxISO.org and to my surprise it
actually worked.

I wasn't too impressed with it's Windows-look-alike interface, but OK, I
only care about functionality.

My first problem is that I don't seem to be able to change the resolution of
the display. The default is 800x600 but I want 1024x768. This, however,
seems to be impossible. I changed the resolution several dozen times,
experimenting with different reboots, but no changes take place. Is there
something I am missing here, or doesn't RedHat support any other modes than
800x600?

Second problem is that I don't get permission to shut down my PC. Instead of
shutting down, the system simply reboots. This is in my opinion more than
strange.

Is Red Hat a good choice or should I give some other clone a chance?

Are my two initial problems typical for Red Hat and/or Linux? Small, random,
but irritating problems due to hardware configurations?
