Linux definitely supports larger sizes (I'm running 1280x1024 right
now). Maybe your hardware doesn't support it. Do you know that your
monitor and video card both support 1024x768?
There is a log file called /var/log/XFree86.0.log or something similar
(I think Redhat 9 would be running XFree86; the newer distros have moved
to Xorg though). Take a look through it e.g. using "less" or "more". If
you search for "Monitor" you should be able to see some log messages
about what sizes it considered; it will reject anything that it thinks
the monitor can not handle.
It's possible that it just hasn't detected your monitor and/or video
card correctly. You should also find some information in the log on
what X thinks your video card or monitor are. If either seem to be a
"stock VGA" device, then it could be a detection problem.
