Before I answer, I must ask:
- What are you going to be doing with it?
- What type of applications MUST you have?
- Are you mostly a desktop user or...?
- What type on computer are you going to use?
- Are you going Linux all the way or will a partitioned/dual boot setup
be more your liking?
- Must it be 100% FREE or are you willing to pay for some of it?
There are many GREAT "flavors" of Linux.
The answer to these will help narrow your choices.
I commend you for looking into Linux.
I have been a fulltime, non-tech user for the past three years and have no
need for that other OS.
