Yeah, this *is* coming from the kernel.

Perhaps some library that /sbin/init needs is not there, or not right.

If you try passing "init=/bin/sh" to the kernel, does that program start?
I'm just trying to determine if the problem is not being able to mount the
root file system or if the init(8) userspace environment has been
corrupted.
