Cannot display /etc/fstab

I got the message when attempting to open this file from the GUI (gnome).
I was logged in as root so there shouldn't be a problem with security.
Then I switched to the console and used "more /etc/fstab" and it displayed
properly.
Is this a bug or am I just plain stupid?
