pptpclient problems in fedora 3

i am having problems with pptp client. it had been working great, but
then i had a problem with my drive that required reinstalling fedora 3.

after reinstalling everything, i have pptp running again, but as soon as i
activate a connection, the connection to the VPN is unusably slow and
other internet connections all slow down a lot as well.

from within pptpconfig, i tried a ping and it reported 40% packet loss.

any suggestions on something to try would be greatly appreciated.
