w32codec installation

hello NG,

Im a beginner at Linux, so be patient :)

I was trying to play windows-format-media, so ive installed w32codes, with
always the same error "something like: codec not found".

Ive tried with xine/totem -> same result.

What is wrong?
Is there something to register or change (like $PATH or something similar).

I'm sorry for my poor english.
