is it safe to just delete all files/subdirs in /var/cache/mod_proxy?

My problem: /var/cache/mod_proxy all of a sudden began to grow very fast.
I stopped it by commenting out mod_proxy from the httpd_conf.

I entered a CacheSize, so it stopped growing but didn't become smaller.

Now can I just remove everything in /var/cache/mod_proxy and start over?
