Can't shutdown and set_rtc_mmss can't update

Hi,

I'm running:

[stry_cat@mybox Home]$ uname -a
Linux mybox.catnet 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp #1 SMP Tue May 17 17:52:23 EDT
2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

For the first time this year I needed to shut down the box. I tried
all of the following after I did an "su -"

/sbin/shutdown -r now
/sbin/shutdown -h now
/sbin/halt
/sbin/poweroff
/sbin/reboot

Nothing worked

Finally I got the idea to do a
/sbin/shutdown -n -h now

That instantly shut off the machine.

I rebooted with no problems. Checking the logs found no errors. I
just figured it was some weird glitch and since I rarely have to reboot
anyway I wouldn't worry about it.

Then this morning I awoke to find
set_rtc_mmss: can't update from 4 to 59

I logged in with out a problem and went straight to google to figure
out what this weird problem was. I didn't find a whole lot. A bunch of
lists where people ask what's wrong, but very few answers. I then
stumbled on a message with what looked like the exact same symptoms as
my system (can't reboot and has this set_rtc_mmss error), but the body
was in Japanese (and I still need the subtitles when I watch Anime).

I then found http://swift.cmbi.ru.nl/prive/past/johnny/linux-smp.html
which discusses a solution, but it seems to be for a much older kernel.
 Will this work?

Can someone please help me?
