This is the link on the download page at mozilla.org which I tried
indeed. As stated above I got nothing than a popup telling me 'download
error'.

Not here. mozilla 1.7.10, FC3.

No. Neither before nor afterwards. Not even after a browser restart. Do
you know where it would be installed in the filesystem? If the install
works as user, I can hardly imagine that all accounts can use it. Hence
I'd rather prefer an rpm package, as Debian provides a .deb for that. I
found a broken link at rpmfind.net which originated from Suse for Fedora
and would install under /opt. Bu....it! How will my mozilla find it?
