Thanks to everyone who responded. It seems like a big part of which
distribution to choose is the knowledge of the installer (and maybe a bit of
luck). I am probably just not experienced/knowledgeable enough to venture
beyond the more stable releases.

Interestingly, one of the easiest distributions I tried was Knoppix 4. I'm
not sure I had a single problem with any aspect of it. But it is a bit slow
to run off the DVD/CD. Very nice to quickly try out though.

The people in this group have been instrumental in helping me through my
problems.
