OK, I'm game.
As the penultimate step, let's rebuild the RPM database because it
may have become corrupted. Just do, as root:
# rpm --rebuilddb
and take a nap. Later, try the
# yum update
step one last time.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
