PROBLEM SOLVED!
Installed yumex, then inspected the "remove" menu. "hal" listed twice!
hal 0:0.4.7-1.FC3
hal 0.5.2-2
Removed the FC3 version (must be a left-over from that "dirty" install),
and "yum update" executes without error.
