Choosing a database product

I am planning on developing a web application that should be deployable
on one or more as-yet undetermined hosting services. I'm thinking in
terms of a Linux basis with Apache2, PHP and MySQL, with development on
a FC3 platform. Where I need some advice is whether MySQL is good choice
in terms of having a large choice of web hosting services, or are other
Linux databases more appropriate? What about the MySQL versions, does
it make sense to stick with 3, or go for 4? Ditto PHP version 4 vs 5.

Note I'm not addressing this to a MySQL NG, because I suspect the answer
will be obvious. I also suspect that the FC3 out-of-the-box PHP and
MySQL versions will be ok as regards features and functionality. Any
comments?

TIA
