Gnome-terminal problem in VNC

I have a RHEL4 server that users connect to using the VNCserver serivce that
ships with Rhel4. The all connect from WinXP. Today none of the users were
able to start gnome-terminal. The process starts, one for each time they try
to start the program, but nothing happens.
I tried to restart the vncserver service, but the problem was still there.
In the end I had to reboot the server, and that took care of the problem.

My question is, what could the problem have been, and what could I have done
to solve it without rebooting?
I do not have a lot of troubleshooting experience, so any feedback is
appreciated.
