Once I discover after clicking on an icon I had to cd to the right desktop I found it easier to type the name on the correct xterm window.

I don't know of a way to do what you want but I know I have yet to find a single thing I can't do using SSH and SFTP to get working files where needed.

the thing is that I am not an experienced Linux user, so I don´t know the nae of every program I use, for instance, to configure the network I go through the kde menu..

It should be right-click on icon and you get a list of properties. One of the properties is the name of the program. So you get up a couple times to right-click on the linux icon and get the name and from then on you don't have to move. And after you get used to that you can change it to runlevel 3 so it never comes up in graphics and you don't waste cycles on it. If course if you need graphics later you can get up again and type startx to get the graphics running.
