You may have a process that is swapping a lot.
Yes. I had a process that was swapping very extensively but it is not running any more. It was running a couple of hours when the machine was started 10 hours ago.
To be sure I rebooted the machine and I am still observing the same thing on the 'idle' system (a loadavg of 1.0 when top says 100% idle).
I have disabled AMD PowerNow to be sure that, the server runs a full speed at all times.
So the problem is still not solved. Thanks for your help!
