pax and RHEL 3 largefile

I have a RHEL 3 AS server which is fully up to date on all Redhat
Errata. We are having problems getting pax to process files that are
large than 2GB. The error mentions something about an unsupported
size. I'm of the impression that pax is largefile capable. Anyone
have any suggestions?
