redhat enterprise 3 and large files

We have a RHEL 3AS server we're attempting to setup as an Oracle
database server. However we're having a tough time getting common
utilities to handle files larger than 2GB (utilities like tar, and pax
for instance). Is there a maximum file size that tar on RHEL 3AS can
handle? If I try making a new tarball (either .tar or a .tgz) it
errors out when the archive hit 2GB. We can certainly create
individual files larger than 2GB (we're using ext3 file system), it's
just these utilities don't seem able to handle them. Is there a fix?
Thanks in advance, I'm pulling my hair out!!
