Problems setting value for LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Hi,

I am using a fedora core 4 system with 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp kernel.

I have been trying to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH in order to include the path to
access the fortran compiler libraries. I am using :

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/intel/fc/9.0/lib; export $LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I tried adding this line to both, my .bash_profile and to /etc/profile.
When I login, start a terminal and type "echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH". The
value is blank.

I have never had problems with setting values for several other variables.
Can someone tell me what is going on ?

Thanks,
shriram
