Re: Sound Permissions on FC4

Hi Randy,

Is your wife logging in at the same time you are, or is she the only
person logged in?
At the same time. That is, (usually) first I log in, then using the
"New Login" menu item, she logs in, then we can switch back and
forth using ctrl-alt-F7
and ctrl-alt-F9.

The permissions to /dev/dsp are set to the first person who logs in to
the machine. If your wife logs in first then she will have the
permissions.
This is to prevent other people from loggin into your machine and
playing sounds without permission.

If you changed the permissions to be 666 then your wife should be able
to use /dev/dsp, but so will anyone else who logs into your
machine. Maybe no one else uses the machine though ...

Hi Shane,

Thanks for responding again.

In some Googling yesterday, I read that changing the permissions
on /dev/dsp interactively will only be a temporary fix. Apparently
there is some voo-doo in the /udev that causes /dev to be
configured dynamically so when you restart, any changes to /dev
are lost.

Apparently Red Hat (or someone) has worked out a mechanism for
permissions and devices via /udev - surely there must be a way
to use it to get this simple task done?

I am not sure if this solution is what you are looking for.

If setting permissions as you say will work, that's fine with me -
this is just a personal machine in my house and no one else should be
logging in anyway.
