Folks,
I did a yum update of my 2.6.11.whatever system to
2.6.16 today
and ended up with an unbootable system. I am pretty
sure the problem is in the sound drivers since this
system is using the ASUS A8N-VM motherboard,
which uses the NVIDIA GeForce 6100 GPU northbridge
and NVIDIA nForce 410 MCP southbridge, and
since I had noticed the sound card wasn't being
detected with 2.6.11, and since 2.6.16 only started
hanging (it booted the first time just fine) when I
ran the soundcard detection applet.
Any advice on this situation? For the mean
time, I'm booting the old 2.6.11 kernel, but
I need sound!
I have not had this problem since back in the good old days with RH 6.1 and a 333MHz chip. Seems the motherboard was only half duplex, output only, for sound and would lock up if set for full duplex, i.e. mike/line and speakers. As it was a motherboard problem there was no solution. In fact it took and upgraded firmware install from CD to get even that.
So when all else fails get out your installation disks and tell the system it is an upgrade rather than a new install. That should get you back to where you started. Then exclude kernal upgrades and run yum to upgrade everthing else.
