Hi to everyone in this NG.
I'm a newbye with Linux. Last week I installed FedoraCore5 and I'm very glad about it. But I've the following problem and I'm here to ask for some usefull suggestions about the way to solve it.
FC5 doesn't see an internal modem card that is SoftK56/ Rockwell-Conexant Voice/Data/Fax/speakerphone : I do not want such a modem running, At this moment I would be glad to see FC5 check that the modem ...exist.
The same happens with an external modem www.chronos.com.tw Smartscm/56.
I know the difficulty to have such winmodem running the right way : I only desire FC5 tell me that the modem exist.

A modem is a serial port device. A Winmodem is not. FC will search for serial port devices. It will not find a Winmodem because it is not a serial port device. You do not want it to find a serial port device which is not a serial port device.

Diatribe:

The problem with Winmodems is that they do not exist outside of a windows environment. Just because it plugs in does not mean the software can recognize it or has to recognize it.

I am very certain if I were to install RH 6.1 on my newest machine it would not recognize the media reader card. That is GOOD!

To recognize hardware it has to respond to queries as in anaconda searching for things supported. There is no reason to search for things not supported.

Thank in advance for your suggestiones and..............sorry for my bad English.
Giorgio

Thanks a lot Matt Giwer!
Your answer is a "Little Compendium About That Misterious Thing Called Winmodem"
You have been very clear (plane, easy ) and, strange but true, I've understood all what You wrote.
Now I realize that it is normal FC5 does not "see" my WinModems. and that it cannot absolutely be the contrary!
Thanks again!
Giorgio
