top of Linux. If a program runs on Win9x it will run on Win4Lin9x. There
is also Win4LinPro which can run XP and 2K on top of Linux. However
W4LPro is much slower than Win9x. Win9x runs at native speeds,
Win4LinPro is painfully slow.
Just for the heck of it I once did try to run IE under wine...but it did
not work.
BTW: the apps that did run under wine worked quite well I thought
Win4Lin9x runs real Windows 9x (95,98 or ME) on top of Linux, it's not
emulating the Windows APIs like Wine it's actually running Windows (you
need a Windows 9x install disk). There are two drawbacks to W4L9x, the
first is that some new Windows programs are no longer Win9x compatible,
for example Quickbooks 2005 and later. The other drawback is that the
Win4Lin people are putting all of their resources into Win4LinPro so they
have gotten slow about keeping up with the new kernel releases (W4L9x
requires a kernel patch, the last kernel supported is 2.6.14.x).
Win4LinPro runs Win2K and WinXP on top of Linux. On paper it sounds much
better, it runs the latest versions of Windows, it doesn't require a
kernel patch, and it will run on 64 bit Linux (W4L9x only runs on 32 bit
Linux). However the drawback of W4LPro is that it's slow. W4L9x is
lightning fast. Remember it runs Win98 at native speeds and Win98 was
designed to run on 133Mhz Pentium I's, if you put it on an Athlon 64
it flys). I've found that Win4LinPro is unpleasantly slow. I use it for
Quickbooks Pro 2005 and it's usable for that but other things aren't. For
example I had to generate a PDF file from a Word Document using Acrobat 5.
On W4L9x it took 20 seconds, on Win4LinPro I killed the job after a half
an hour.
