Redhat LDAP lookups

We currently have several Redhat 3AS servers authenticating via LDAP.
We are noticing some long delays on some services and after looking at
the traffic I notice that the machine keeps trying to do LDAP lookups
for the root user in the LDAP tree. My nsswitch.conf file has "files
ldap" set for passwd, shadow, and group. Why does it keep on insisting
on trying to lookup root in LDAP?
