I have been using "tar -zcvf" to backup my home directories. I tried to
restore one of these today, but was unsuccessful. Doing a little research
it turns out the compression is unsafe. When I tared it w/o compression,
it restored perfectly. No data lost at this point.
After my backups run, I copy them to a dvd. Due to the fact that I am
currently running fc2, I have to use a windows box to make the dvd's. My
largest file is about 4 gig, but uncompressed it goes up to 10 gig.
1. Would it be safe to use the zip command to compress these files?
2. What other options should I look at for backups? (This is a home
network, so a tape drive is not in the budget.)
