Can't find a package that my system obviously needs

It has been discussed previously that my Compaq ProLiant 2500, for
undetermined reasons, refuses to install from any of the Fedora Core
installation methods available today. No matter what the source of the
ISO, no matter what speed the burn, no matter what brand CDR, and no
matter what switches I supply at the installation prompts, it hangs up
before the install begins.
I have successfully installed RedHat 9 twice (lost the first due to a
failed HD) on this system. Both times I have successfully upgraded to
FC1 via apt-get.
I am at a loss for upgrading beyond FC1. I have followed instructions
given in several different places for upgrading using yum. I've used
the directions at
http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Upgrading_Red_Hat_Linux_with_yum.html
and http://linux.duke.edu/%7Eskvidal/misc/fc1-fc2-yum-hints.txt, but
one package seems to be getting in the way.
I'm using the command "yum -y upgrade"
As it runs, it eventually returns the following error: ".Package xchat2
needs libcom_err.so.3, this is not available."
While trying another upgrade method, I got a message that one of the
postgresql updates needed it as well. Based on my research, this file
was relied on by many packages, but I can't seem to locate it anywhere?
Does anyone know of a repository where I can find it, or should I just
begin using "rpm -e" to remove any package that relies on it so I can
get the yum upgrade to go?
Any help would be appreciated. I've learned so much doing this, and
you folks are the reason I've gotten this far.
Thanks,
Steve
