Hi Lenard,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried all of your suggestions but unfortunately, they didn't have any effect. After rebooting, I poked around /var/log/messages and the only possibly interesting line was this:

Aug 26 16:13:59 mbox2 kernel: vesafb: mode is 1024x768x16, linelength=2048, pages=20

Any other thoughts?
