I just checked at Amazon and the leading
books come with a DVD. I don't have
a DVD reader. Never dreamed I'd need
one, at least for the next few years.

In the past, the book route has been the
hassle-free way to get Linux. I don't
mind spending $30-$50, and I like to
have the print reference.

Other than the Web browser (Opera), xedit
and xv (a simple image processing utility),
I can't think of anything I use under
Linux that I didn't write myself. I
definitely don't have any need for a
desktop like KDE or Gnome. However, I will
want to use GIMP in the future as I
develop image-proecssing tools using GTK.
I don't mind switching to Windows XP
to use other freeware for burning
CD-ROMS and controlling a digital
camera. So I could probably use any basic
Linux, I guess, that has GTK.

Fedora comes on CDs as well as DVDs, all you have to do is download the
ISOs. If you lack a broadband connection then buy a set of disks from
http://www.linuxcentral.com, they cost almost nothing.
